Algemene uitleg tabs
Algemeen
Ik ben bij het uitschrijven van de tabs uitgegaan dat lezer redelijk bekend is met het algemene Tab-systeem en een redelijk gevorderde (bas)gitarist is. De meeste speciale tab-symbolen (hammer-on, pull-off, slide, flagoletten etc) komen overeen met de gebruikte in o.a. gitaarboeken, sommige zijn iets anders. Onderaan deze pagina staat een verdere verklaring van enkele symbolen. Bij sommige songs heb ik onder de kop extra opmerkingen staan zoals gebruikte stemming, effecten of andere zaken die van belang zijn. Verder heb ik hier nog wat andere aanvullingen om het een en ander duidelijk te maken:
Stemming
De normale stemming is van laag naar hoog: E - A - G - D - B - E. Andere stemmingen zijn aangegeven. Bij de tabs zelf heb ik toch E - A - G - D - B - E aangehouden, ook al is de stemming verlaagd. Dit geldt ook voor eventueel accoordbenamingen in de begeleidende tekst: een F-accoord bij een algehele stemverlaging van een halve toon is dan eigenlijk een E-accoord. Alleen als de snaren onderling verschillend zijn gestemd ten opzichte van de standaardstemming, zoals de "drop-D tuning" (D - A - G - D - B - E), dan is dit wel bij de tabs en in de tekst aangehouden.
Gebruik van effecten
Omdat ik vooral songs van heavy metal bands uitzoek (die bijna alles spelen met het distortion-effect), moet je ervan uitgaan dat je altijd distortion moet gebruiken tenzij anders aangegeven. Bijvoorbeeld: accoustisch, chorus, flanger etc.
Manier van aanslaan
Je zult zelf even moet kijken bij welke gitaarpartijen je met je plectrum opslag of neerslag speelt. Bij sommige snelle partijen van diverse metalbands, kan het niet anders dan dat je op-neer-op etc. moet spelen. In sommige gevallen heb ik wel vermeld dat je op- (^) of neerslag (v) moet gebruiken, maar dit doe ik alleen als dit bepalend is voor het geluid. Hetzelfde geldt voor het plukken van snaren met je vingers. Bij de bastabs heb ik niet vermeld of er met plectrum of met vingers wordt gespeeld. Van de uitgezochte tabs weet ik dat de bassist van Peter Pan Speedrock met plectrum speelt, maar een gevorderde bassist kan het ook nog wel spelen met zijn vingers. De bassist van de Rollins Band speelt in ieder geval met zijn vingers.
Arrangement
Het arrangement van een song heb ik niet uitgeschreven, maar dit ontdek je snel genoeg na luisteren van de desbetreffende song. Alle riffs en stukjes schrijf ik uit, met alle variaties. Staat er bij "met variaties", dan is alleen de hoofd- of eerste versie van een riff uitgeschreven. De solo is soms ook geheel of gedeeltelijk uitgeschreven, in veel gevallen is het te veel werk of gaat de solo te snel om uit te zoeken en dan heb ik dit niet gedaan. Soms staat ook de baspartij vermeld, gedetailleerd of slechts de basistonen - dit om een beter beeld te krijgen van een partij, in het bijzonder als de bas andere tonen speelt dan de gitaar en hiermee een accoord creeërt.
Meerdere gitaren
Bij meerdere gitaren in een song is aangegeven welke gitaar wat speelt. Als er niets staat dan zijn is de desbetreffende partij voor alle gitaren hetzelfde.
Speciale symbolen met eventuele nadere uitleg:
7h8 = hammer-on : sla eerste toon aan en "hamer" de tweede, deze dus niet aanslaan
7p5 = pull-off : sla eerste toon en verkrijg de tweede door de snaar weg te slaan met de vinger die de eerste toon pakt op de hals
12(p0) = lichte pull-off die ontstaat zonder de snaar daadwerkelijk weg te slaan
7tr9 = snel herhaalde pull-off + hammer-on (=trill)
t5 = tab: ontstaat door toon te "hameren" op hals, zonder aan te slaan
8b9 = druk 8e fret op naar 9e: druk zover op dat de toon wordt verkregen die je anders hebt als je 9e fret aanslaat
b9 = sla opgeduwde toon aan : druk eerst op (tot je de toon krijgt die je hebt als je de 9e fret aanslaat) en sla dan pas aan - meestal staat aangegeven op welke positie op de hals
7b8r7 = druk 7e fret op naar 8e en laat weer terugkomen in oude positie
7b = druk de snaar een klein beetje op: druk circa een kwart noot op
~ = vibrato
~~ = veel vibrato
\ = slide omlaag: in het geval van bijv. 7\5: sla alleen eerste toon aan en "glij" naar de tweede; in het geval van bijv. \7: sla ergens hoger op de hals aan en "glij" naar de 7e positie.
/ = slide omhoog: in het geval van bijv. 5/7: sla alleen eerste toon aan en "glij" naar de tweede; in het geval van bijv. /7: sla ergens lager op de hals aan en "glij" naar de 7e positie.
\\\ = langzame slide omlaag
/// = langzame slide omhoog
< = strijk plectrum over snaren omlaag
> = strijk plectrum over snaren omhoog
x = percussieslag: houd je vingers tegen de snaren bij aanslaan, maar druk niet in - meestal op positie van de tonen/accoorden die er aan vooraf gingen
0 = afdempen: demp snaren af bij aanslaan met je palm van de hand waarmee je aanslaat, bij de kam van de gitaar
0 = licht afdempen
10.10 = speel zeer snel achter elkaar
(2) = wordt af en toe gespeeld
<7> = kunstmatige flagolet: direct na aanslaan moet je je duim - waarmee je het plectrum vast houdt - nog even de aangeslagen snaar aanraken: dit veroorzaakt een "boventoon" - gaat het beste met veel distortion
^7^ = natuurlijke flagolet: raak de toon lichtjes aan boven de 7e fret zonder in te drukken - dit veroorzaakt een "boventoon"
>7 = accent geven
v = neerslag
^ = opslag
* = onduidelijk
( = als arpeggio aangeslagen: sla het accoord niet in eens aan, maar snaar voor snaar in de richting die je aanslaat, maar sneller dan bij een "gebroken accoord", waarbij je heel nadrukkelijk snaar voor snaar aanslaat
R = rust
H = toon aanhouden: houdt de toon aan uit de vorige maat

cursieve cijfers = laat doorklinken: laat deze tonen doorklinken met de volgende, zodat de afzonderlijke tonen een accoord vormen

General explanation tabs
General
My tabs are based on the idea that the one who's read theme, is pretty familiar with the general tab-system and is a pretty developed (bass)guitarist. The most used tab-symbols (hammer-on, pull-off, slide, harmonics etc) are similiar to the ones used in i.a. guitarbooks, some are little different. There's a list below of this page with a futher explanation of some symbols. Some songs contains extra comments below the head about used tuning, effects or other issues that are important. Besides that, here are some different replenishments to clear up some things:
Tuning
The normal tuning is from low to high: E - A - G - D - B - E. Other tunings are mentioned. However, at the tabs itself, I've kept E - A - G - D - B - E not depending from a detuning. This also applies for possible chorddefinitions in the covering text: a F-chord in a total detuning of one step is actually an E-chord. Only if the strings are detuned relative with regard to the standardtuning, like the "drop-D tuning" (D - A - G - D - B - E), than this is kept up at the tabs and in the text
Use of effects
Because I translate mostly songs of heavy metal bands (who plays almost everything with the distortion-effect), you have to use always distortion, except mentioned different. For example: clean tone, chorus, flanger etc.
Way of striking
You have to look yourselfs which guitarparts to play with your pick as upstroke or downstroke. Some fast parts of various metalbands, cannot be played different than playing as up-down-up etc. However, in some cases, I've mentioned that you've to use up- (^) or downstroke (v), but I do this only if this is typical for the sound. The same for picking the strings with you fingers. I haven't mentioned at the basstabs if is played with pick or fingers. Of the translated songs, I know the bassplayer of Peter Pan Speedrock plays with a pick, but a well advanced bassplayer can also still handle it with his fingers. The bassplayer of the Rollins Band plays definetely with his fingers.
Arrangement
The arrangements of a song aren't written out, but this is discovered easy after listening to the relevant song. I write out all riffs and parts, with all variations. If is mentioned: "with variations", then only the main- or first version of a riff is written out. The solo is sometimes also complete or partly written out, but in many cases is too much work or the solo is too fast to translate and then I haven't. The basspart is also mentioned sometimes, in details or just the basictones - this will give you a greater view on a part, especially if the bass plays other tones than the guitar what will create a chord by this.
More guitars
In case of more guitars, then is mentioned which guitar plays which part. If nothing is mentioned, than the relevant part is the same for all guitars.
Special symbols with possible more explanation:
7h8 = hammer-on : strike first tone and "hamer" the second, so don't strike that one
7p5 = pull-off : strike first tone and get the second by pull-off the string with the finger that takes the first one on the neck
12(p0) = slight pull-off, which arises without actual knocking off the string
7tr9 = rapidly repeated pull-off + hammer-on (=trill)
t5 = tab: exists by "hamering" on the neck, without striking
8b9 = bend 8th fret to 9th: bend as far enough to get the tone that you got if you just strike the 9th fret
b9 = strike bended tone: bend first (until you'll get the tone you got when striking the 9th fret) and only then strike - mostly it is mentioned on which position on the neck
7b8r7 = bend 7th fret to 8th and release to old position
7b = bend the string a little bit: bend about for a quarter note

\ = slide down: in case of for example 7\5: strike only the first tone and slide to the second; in case of for example \7: strike somewhere higher on the neck en slide to 7th position
/ = slide up: in case of for example 5/7"strike only the first tone and slide to the second; in case of for example /7: strike somewhere lower on the neck and slide to 7th position

x = percussionstrike: hold your fingers to the strings while striking, but don't push them - mostly on position of tones/chords that went before
0 = mute strings: mute strings during striking with the palm of the hand which using for striking, near to the position where the strings are fixed to the body of the guitar

<7> = artificial harmonic: directly after striking you've to touch with your thumb - the one that holds the pick - the striked string: this causes a harmonic - this works out the best with a lot of distortion
^7^ = natural harmonic: touch the string lightly above the 7th fret without pushing - this causes a harmonic
>7 = give accent
v = downstroke
^ = upstroke
* = unclear
( = striked as arpeggio: don't strike the chord in one time, but more string after string in the direction of striking, but faster as with a arpeggio - that one is played with emphatic one after the other striked strings
R = rest
H = hold tone: hold tone from previous bar

italic numbers = let ring: let ring these tones with the next cursive - the seperate tones shall create a chord as result of this
